The MA early childhood field uses a lot of acronyms. Here's what they actually mean, who needs them, and how to get one.

Important to know: You don't need to already hold the previous certificate to apply for the next one β€” you just need to meet that level's requirements. So if you can meet Lead Teacher's rules today, you can apply today.

High School Diploma or GED / HiSET

HS / GED

A high school diploma or its MA equivalent (HiSET). Required for nearly all plumbing apprenticeship programs.

Who needs it
Anyone applying for a union or open-shop plumbing apprenticeship in MA.
How to get it
Massachusetts uses the HiSET exam. Free prep through MA adult education. Most adults prepare in 2–6 months.
Cost
HiSET test fee ~$95. Prep is free at MA adult ed centers.

OSHA 10-Hour Construction

OSHA 10

Federal construction safety training covering fall protection, electrical, struck-by, and caught-in/between hazards. Universally required on commercial and union plumbing job sites in MA.

Who needs it
Every helper, apprentice, and journeyman on commercial sites in MA.
How to get it
Take the 10-hour course online (OSHA-authorized providers like ClickSafety, 360training) or in person.
Cost
~$60 online. Lifetime card.

MA Plumbing Apprentice License

Apprentice

Entry-level state license that lets you perform plumbing work under the supervision of a licensed master. Required to log the 8,500 hours toward your journeyman exam.

Who needs it
Anyone training to become a licensed plumber in MA.
How to get it
Apply through the MA Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters. Requires age 18+, sponsorship by a licensed master plumber, and enrollment in a Board-approved school.
Cost
Application fee: ~$95. Renewal every 2 years (~$80).

MA Journeyman Plumber License

Journeyman

State license to perform plumbing work without direct master supervision. The first license that lets you earn full plumber wages.

Who needs it
Anyone who wants to perform licensed plumbing work in MA without a master watching every job.
How to get it
Complete 8,500 hours of supervised work + 550 hours of approved classroom instruction (4–5 years), then pass the MA Journeyman Plumber written exam.
Cost
Exam + license fee: ~$150–$250. Biennial renewal: ~$80 + Board-approved CE hours.

MA Master Plumber License

Master

Top-tier state plumbing license. Lets you pull permits in your own name, supervise apprentices and journeymen, and operate as the licensed contractor of record on plumbing jobs.

Who needs it
Plumbers running their own crews, pulling permits, owning a plumbing business, or teaching apprentices.
How to get it
Hold an active MA Journeyman Plumber license for at least 1 year, then pass the MA Master Plumber exam (covers 248 CMR Plumbing Code, business law, blueprint reading, sizing).
Cost
Exam + license fee: ~$200–$350. Biennial renewal: ~$100 + Board-approved CE hours.

MA Gas Fitter License

Gas Fitter

Separate state license required to install, repair, or replace gas piping and gas appliances in MA. Issued by the same Board (Plumbers and Gas Fitters).

Who needs it
Plumbers who want to install water heaters, boilers, ranges, or any other gas-fired appliance β€” and the piping that feeds them.
How to get it
Has its own apprentice / journeyman / master tracks under the MA Board. Many MA plumbers carry both plumbing AND gas licenses.
Cost
Apprentice ~$95, Journeyman ~$150, Master ~$200. Biennial renewal with CE.

MA Backflow Prevention Tester / Installer

Backflow

Certification to install and annually test backflow prevention devices on potable water systems in MA. Required by most water departments.

Who needs it
Journeyman and master plumbers who want to bid commercial work or sign annual backflow test contracts.
How to get it
Complete an approved 40-hour backflow tester course (Peterson School, NEIWPCC, etc.), then pass the certification exam.
Cost
Course + exam: ~$500–$900. Recertification every 2–3 years.

EPA Lead RRP Certification (Renovator)

EPA RRP

Federal certification required to disturb painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes (common when cutting walls/floors for plumbing). Protects against lead-paint exposure.

Who needs it
Any plumber who renovates, repairs, or repipes in MA's older housing stock.
How to get it
Complete an 8-hour EPA-approved RRP course. Recertification every 5 years.
Cost
~$200–$300 per renovator. Firm certification adds ~$300.

MA Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) Registration

HIC

MA registration required for any contractor doing residential work over $1,000 per job. Issued by the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation.

Who needs it
Plumbing business owners doing residential service or remodel work in MA.
How to get it
Apply through the MA Office of Consumer Affairs. Includes a contribution to the HIC Guaranty Fund and proof of liability insurance.
Cost
Registration + guaranty fund: ~$250–$300. Renewal every 2 years.

MA Business Registration (LLC / DBA)

Business Reg

Registering your plumbing business as an LLC, sole proprietorship, or corporation with the MA Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Who needs it
Any plumbing business owner. Required for hiring employees, opening a business bank account, and protecting personal assets.
How to get it
File with the MA Secretary of the Commonwealth. Get a federal EIN from the IRS (free, instant). Register for MA state taxes and unemployment insurance.
Cost
LLC filing: ~$500. DBA: ~$50–$100 at city hall. EIN: free.
