CDL Driver (Class A or B)

Get your CDL and drive tractor-trailers, dump trucks, or transit buses β€” the biggest pay jump in the trade.

Pay range
$55K–$85K/yr in MA W-2 with benefits. MBTA bus and heavy-rail operators top $90K+ with overtime and pension. Local Teamster freight (Local 25, Local 170) hits $80K+ with full benefits.
What this job is

The honest version

The Commercial Driver's License is the single biggest pay raise in driving. With a Class B (straight trucks, dump trucks, transit buses, MBTA) or Class A (tractor-trailer combinations) you unlock W-2 jobs at $55K–$85K with benefits and union pensions. In MA, you get your CDL through a 160-hour ELDT-compliant training program at a community college (Quinsigamond, Mount Wachusett, NSCC) or a private school (New England Tractor Trailer, MTC). Many employers β€” Sysco, US Foods, UPS, FedEx Freight, MBTA, the Teamsters apprenticeship β€” will pay for your CDL school in exchange for a 1–2 year work commitment. The road test happens at an MA RMV CDL site (Wilmington, Brockton, Worcester, West Springfield).

Is this you?

You'll fit if…

  • You can pass a DOT physical and drug screen, period
  • You're comfortable driving 10+ hours in a row in all weather
  • You can stay calm in tight Boston intersections with a 53-foot trailer
  • You'd rather drive a route than work in an office
What you'll do

Core skills

  • Pre-trip and post-trip DOT inspections in under 15 minutes
  • Backing a 53-foot trailer (straight, offset, parallel, alley dock)
  • Hours-of-service logging via ELD (Electronic Logging Device)
  • Trip planning around bridges (low clearance), HAZMAT routes, and weight stations
  • Securement of freight (chains, straps, tarps, edge protectors)
  • Defensive driving in MA winter weather (chains, snow tires, black ice)
What you'll need

  • Practice the MA CDL general knowledge test on the free FMCSA practice apps
Heads up

Real talk before you commit

  • A failed DOT drug screen ends your CDL career, often permanently. The federal Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse follows you to every employer.
  • OTR (over the road) jobs pay well but you live in the cab 5–6 days a week. Local and regional MA jobs let you sleep at home.
  • Hours-of-service rules are strict. ELD violations cost you your job and the carrier its operating authority.
  • MA winters are no joke. The first season is when most new drivers crash. Slow down, take chains seriously.
