Specialty cleaning is where pay starts to climb past $25/hr. Post-construction cleanup (after a contractor finishes a renovation), move-out cleans (apartment turnovers for landlords and property managers), carpet and upholstery cleaning (Stanley Steemer, Chem-Dry, independents), tile and grout restoration, and biohazard or trauma cleanup all pay 30–60% more than standard residential. In MA, most specialty work runs through restoration companies (ServiceMaster, ServPro, PuroClean, Rainbow International) that offer real W-2 jobs with paid IICRC training, OT, and benefits. The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) is the industry-standard credential — most MA restoration shops will pay for your first certifications in exchange for a 1–2 year commitment.

• Operating truck-mounted carpet extractors, air movers, and dehumidifiers
• Reading a moisture meter and documenting drying logs for insurance claims
• Safe chemical handling — peroxides, oxidizers, bleach, antimicrobials
• Donning and doffing PPE for biohazard work without cross-contamination
• Customer-facing professionalism in someone's worst day (flood, fire, death)
• Photo and damage documentation for insurance adjusters (Xactimate familiarity is a big plus)

• On-call work means 2 AM water emergency calls. The premium pay reflects the lifestyle hit.
• Biohazard and trauma scenes are emotionally heavy. Talk to other techs before you sign on for that work full-time.
• Insurance-paid restoration jobs depend on Xactimate documentation. Learn the software early — it's your raise lever.
• Some restoration shops misclassify techs as 1099 to skip workers' comp and OT. MA AG aggressively enforces — check your pay stub.
