Deep Clean / Specialty Tech

Move into post-construction, move-outs, carpets, or biohazard work β€” premium pay for premium skill.

Pay range
$22–$32/hr in MA W-2 with overtime. IICRC-certified water and fire restoration techs hit $28–$40/hr. Biohazard and trauma scene techs at MA-licensed companies clear $35–$50/hr with on-call premiums.
What this job is

The honest version

Specialty cleaning is where pay starts to climb past $25/hr. Post-construction cleanup (after a contractor finishes a renovation), move-out cleans (apartment turnovers for landlords and property managers), carpet and upholstery cleaning (Stanley Steemer, Chem-Dry, independents), tile and grout restoration, and biohazard or trauma cleanup all pay 30–60% more than standard residential. In MA, most specialty work runs through restoration companies (ServiceMaster, ServPro, PuroClean, Rainbow International) that offer real W-2 jobs with paid IICRC training, OT, and benefits. The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) is the industry-standard credential β€” most MA restoration shops will pay for your first certifications in exchange for a 1–2 year commitment.

Is this you?

You'll fit if…

  • You can lift 50+ lbs and run heavy equipment all day
  • You stay calm in stressful environments (flood, fire, biohazard, post-eviction)
  • You're meticulous β€” restoration work is judged by a fresh customer's eye
  • You can be on-call for emergency water and fire damage
What you'll do

Core skills

  • Operating truck-mounted carpet extractors, air movers, and dehumidifiers
  • Reading a moisture meter and documenting drying logs for insurance claims
  • Safe chemical handling β€” peroxides, oxidizers, bleach, antimicrobials
  • Donning and doffing PPE for biohazard work without cross-contamination
  • Customer-facing professionalism in someone's worst day (flood, fire, death)
  • Photo and damage documentation for insurance adjusters (Xactimate familiarity is a big plus)
What you'll need

Required certifications

Stand out

Things that give you a leg up

  • Prior carpet cleaning, hotel housekeeping, or janitorial supervisor experience
  • Bilingual β€” restoration crews in MA are mostly Spanish-speaking
  • Comfort being on-call (water emergencies don't keep business hours)
  • Construction or trades background (drywall, paint, demo) β€” restoration overlaps with reconstruction
  • Strong stomach β€” biohazard and trauma scene work pays the most for a reason

Heads up

Real talk before you commit

  • On-call work means 2 AM water emergency calls. The premium pay reflects the lifestyle hit.
  • Biohazard and trauma scenes are emotionally heavy. Talk to other techs before you sign on for that work full-time.
  • Insurance-paid restoration jobs depend on Xactimate documentation. Learn the software early β€” it's your raise lever.
  • Some restoration shops misclassify techs as 1099 to skip workers' comp and OT. MA AG aggressively enforces β€” check your pay stub.
