The MA early childhood field uses a lot of acronyms. Here's what they actually mean, who needs them, and how to get one.

Important to know: You don't need to already hold the previous certificate to apply for the next one β€” you just need to meet that level's requirements. So if you can meet Lead Teacher's rules today, you can apply today.

High School Diploma or GED

HS / GED

A high school diploma or its equivalent (HiSET / GED). Required for admission to most MA barber schools.

Who needs it
Anyone enrolling in a MA-approved barber school.
How to get it
Massachusetts uses the HiSET exam. Free prep classes through MA adult education programs. Most people prepare in 2–6 months.
Cost
HiSET test fee ~$95. Prep classes are usually free.

MA-Approved Barber School (1,000 hours)

Barber School

A training program approved by the MA Board of Registration of Barbers. Covers haircutting, shaving, sanitation, skin/scalp anatomy, and MA barber law over 1,000 hours.

Who needs it
Anyone who wants to sit for the MA barber licensing exam. The alternative is an apprentice permit (1,500 hours).
How to get it
Enroll in a Board-approved school. Programs run 6–12 months full-time. Check the Board's list of approved schools at mass.gov.
Cost
Tuition: $8,000–$18,000. Financial aid (FAFSA), VA benefits, and payment plans are common.

MA Barber License

Barber License

The state license to legally practice barbering in Massachusetts. Issued by the Board of Registration of Barbers after passing the written and practical exams.

Who needs it
Everyone who cuts hair for money in MA.
How to get it
Complete 1,000 hours of approved barber school (or 1,500 hours as a registered apprentice), then pass the MA Board exam β€” written (sanitation, law, theory) + practical (haircut, shave on a live model). Apply through the Division of Occupational Licensure.
Cost
Exam + license fee: ~$100–$200. Renewal every 2 years: ~$50–$80.

MA Barber Instructor License

Instructor

License to teach barbering at an approved MA barber school or supervise registered apprentices. Requires experience as a licensed barber.

Who needs it
Licensed barbers who want to teach at barber schools or take on apprentices.
How to get it
Hold an active MA barber license for at least 3 years, then apply through the Board. Some programs require additional instructor training hours.
Cost
Application fee: ~$50–$100.

MA Barbershop License

Shop License

A separate license from your personal barber license. Issued by the MA Board of Registration of Barbers to the physical shop location after it passes inspection for sanitation, ventilation, plumbing, and station setup.

Who needs it
Anyone opening or operating a barbershop in Massachusetts.
How to get it
Apply through the Board with your shop address, floor plan, and proof of compliance. The Board inspects the shop before issuing the license. Must be renewed periodically.
Cost
Application + inspection fee: ~$100–$300. Annual renewal: ~$50–$150.

MA Business Registration (LLC / DBA)

Registering your barbering business as an LLC, sole proprietorship, or corporation with the MA Secretary of the Commonwealth. Required if you're operating under a business name or hiring employees.

Who needs it
Independent barbers operating under a business name and shop owners.
How to get it
File with the MA Secretary of the Commonwealth (online). Get a federal EIN from the IRS (free, instant). Register for MA state taxes. Open a business bank account.
Cost
LLC filing: ~$500. DBA (sole proprietor): ~$50–$100 at your city clerk's office. EIN: free.
